Barnhill’s Books˜Wine˜Art˜Gifts is located in the historic West End district of Downtown Winston–Salem North Carolina.
We carry only North Carolina wine and do tastings everyday because we want our customers to find their new favorite.
We carry local authors and publishers because it’s next to impossible for these creative individuals and small companies to get shelve space in big box stores and we thought that was a shame.
We couldn’t leave out our artists friends and brought them along for the ride. Since opening we’ve added new friends to that list of artisans and will continue to add unique pieces as time goes on.
We liked the thought of one stop for everything and added gifts to our list. We have everything needed to make gift baskets or gift bags that you can present directly to your gift receiver.
So how did we come to be?
We get asked that more than you would believe. And depending who you ask, you get a little more of the story. So here’s the short of it...
In 2007 one of our esteemed owners met a bunch of great writers. Then found out how hard it is to get a book published by a big publishing firm. So he told them that he would start a publishing company to give all those great writers out there a place to call home. Many laughed at him...until nine months later they had books in hand.
Still learning about the state of the publishing industry, this owner, found it was very hard to get a book into a big box store and while the internet is a great place to sell books, there’s nothing quite like seeing your book on the shelf of a physical bookstore. So fine, he said, I’ll just start a book store. Many laughed at him.
While working out the details he had the pleasure of visiting a local winery with family. An epiphany stuck yet again. Why not have wine with the books. Diligently he continued his pursuit bringing in local artists and founders into his dream.
One year later…Barnhill’s opened on March 31st 2010 and while the road has been bumpy with shear drop offs on one side and a solid granite wall on the other, we are still open.
